Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelungenlied, is the
Teutonic version of Sigurd, who, in the Volsunga Saga, slew
the dragon Fafnir and took his hoard of cursed elfin
gold. The theme of the man fighting against the
dragon (St. George became the patron) is one of the most
popular of all medieval literatures, and can be found
earlier in Beowulf
